Can anyone tell me how to stop these #&%*@&! annoying
messenger service pop-up ads?

If you're sure that you don't need Messenger for anything, go to the
Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components. Uninstall Windows
Messenger- it's down at the bottom of the list.

If you're referring to browser ad popups, that is a different story.

good luck, Dave

Open Messenger and look in the Options drop down menu's, un-check all the
boxes for loading at startup or displaying messenger.
Then REBOOT

Greetings --

The messenger service spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring these messages is particularly
foolish.

We have been worried by these - and we don't have a
firewall. Can you recommend one and how to get it quickly
Thanks

John;
Windows XP has a built in firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q283673

Here is a good free firewall: (They also sell upgraded versions)

Greetings --

WinXP's built-in firewall is fine at stopping incoming attacks, if
properly configured, and hiding all of your ports from probes. It
doesn't give you any alarms to tell you that it is working, though.
What WinXP also does not do, is protect you from any Trojans or
spyware that you might download and install inadvertently. It doesn't
monitor out-going traffic at all, much less block (or at least ask you
about) the bad or the questionable out-going packets.

To enable the built-in firewall, Start > Network Connections >
Right-click the connection > Properties > Advanced > Protect my
computer.....

ZoneAlarm or Sygate are much better, and there are a free versions
available. Personally, I've been very happy with Symantec's Norton
Internet Security 2002 (NIS 2003 is now available), which includes
Norton AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall, parental controls, privacy
controls, and ad blocking. (Just the elimination of most pop-up ads
on the Internet made the price worth-while to me.)
