Can't access necessary file

I have Windows XP Home Edition. After I run a scan, I get
a message that says "C:\windows\system\mapisrvr.exe -
"can not access necessary file gapi32.dll". I did a
search for the file but it was not on the computer. Is
there a way to restore the file from the install disc
rather than do a complete reinstall? I hate the hassle of
having to call "big brother" (Bill) to give me permission
to continue using what I all ready paid for.

On my computer, gapi32.dll is a Outlook 2002 file not Windows XP. If your
scan was a Norton scan, I recall other posts that refer to a Symantec fix
that may apply to your error message.

If not, try opening Outlook or any Office XP application and using Help,
Detect and Repair.

This is a known Norton issue. (Before doing the fix below, open Windows
Explorer, click the Tools menu, click Folder Options. When the Folder
Options dialog box opens click the View tab, scroll down to the heading:
Hidden Files and Folders, and click the circle to the left of: Show Hidden
Files and Folders to allow those files to be seen. Then just below that
item on the list, you'll see two more entries Hide Extensions for Known File
Types and Hide Protected Operating System Files click the boxes to the left
of those items to remove the checkmarks for those items. Then click the
Apply and OK buttons at the bottom of the dialog box. With the above done,
the following should fix your problem:

Copy the file Gapi32.dll to where Norton expects to find it:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT.
3. In the right Explorer pane, right-click on the file Gapi32.dll and
choose Copy.
4. Navigate to the folder C:\Windows\System32.
5. Right click on the folder System32 and choose Paste.
6. Close Windows Explorer.
7. Reboot the computer.

You are partially correct.

During the installation of Office 2000, the installer places an entry into
the registry pointing to gapi32.dll. Unfortunately, the file is actually
installed in another folder (programming mistake). Norton finds this error
and "correctly" reports it.
