If your DOS app is a commercial grade app that was written to comply with
specs for MS-DOS V5.00, Win XP is probably the most stable Windows
platform for DOS legacy apps.
Your complaint is not exactly precise, but if you mean that only the DOS app
freezes or slows down, see http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/index.html
and also the related web page at
http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/windowsxp.html. Search this site for
"keyboard", "keys", and "mouse for tips on how Wordperfect-For-DOS users
optimize keyboard and mouse performance in Windows environments..
If you mean your whole system freezes or slows to a crawl, try disabling
Standby and Hibernation modes in Control Panel <Display> and <Power
Management> applets.
For certain chipsets, NTVDM problems will ensue after a system emerges from
Standby or Hibernation. This bug goes largely unnoticed because many users
no longer run DOS apps. Also, to test whether you are susceptible to this
problem, you must actually run a DOS app which sets up a slightly different
environment than an NT Command Prompt (i.e., Command vs. Cmd), and you must
run the DOS app after you emerge from Standby.
