I have all kinds of trouble with XP Pro, from word and
excel crashing to taking 30 seconds to past a simple 30k
text. I wonder if it's possible to downgrade to XP Home
and get rid of the troubles

There is no "downgrade" path and even if there was it would not fix your
probs. You would have to format and install xp home. XP pro is the same as
XP home except it has some advanced add-ons and features home does not. Both
are equally stable. Have you done regular maintenance of computer, have you
tried to uninstall / reinstall office? Or try a format and clean install to
get rid of old probs.

No, you would have to reformat and install XP Home clean.
However, don't waste your money, if your having problems with Pro then you
most likely will with home. Actually, a reformat and reinstall of Pro would
serve the same purpose as doing it with Home.
They are identical in their core technology, Pro just has some additional
features in security and networking - nothing that would cause your system
to be unstable versus Home.

Some things to think about:

Did you run the XP compatibility checker before installing Pro?
Do you have all the latest XP drivers for your peripherals, especially your
video card and sound card?
Have you run disk cleanup, chkdsk, and defrag lately?
Before doing a clean install, consider doing a repair install of XP Pro. Set
your bios to boot from cd, boot up with the XP cdrom, select new install at
first screen, then at next screen select your existing install and press r
for repair. This will do an in place installation over your existing XP Pro
while retaining all your programs and data. As always though, with any os
install, I would recommend backing up your important data files in case
something goes wrong.
Then, if none of these makes it better, consider a clean install of XP Pro.
Again, back up your important data files.

1. No, it's not possible to downgrade to XP Home.

2. Even if you could, Home would not solve your problems. XP
Professional and Home are identical, except that Professional
includes a few features (mostly related to networking and
security) missing from Home.

Look elsewhere for a solution. You might want to try reinstalling
MS Office.

If you are having such troubles in Pro, switching to Home is not the
solution. But it is difficult to make any suggestion on such little
description. Best guess is there is hardware trouble of some sort.
