I have XP Pro, and I think I got a virus:

the message popped up that my WINDOWS/system 32 file was
corrupted. CHKDSK ran when I rebooted, and now I can't
get into the system!

When I log onto my user settings (or my wife's user
settings) only the wallpaper comes up briefly - no
toolbar, nothing else loads, then it signs me off back to
the log in screen.

Sign in & immediate sign off. I CAN"T ACCESS MY COMPUTER!!

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Can you log on as Administrator then run System Restore? Try from Safe Mode
if you have to.
When you restart just hold down the F8 key until you see the Advanced
Bootmenu then use Safe Mode. Log on as Administrator and go to Program
menu->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore.

If that doesn't work try this method to boot into Windows
