Hi guys
I understand that once I've installed XP, I should go to
the Window update site and download all the critical
patches. I read from the newsboard that 811493 is a big
No-No. Are there any other biggie that I should stear clear
of at the moment. I don't want to update everything and
then find some thats a bit suspect.
Thanks.
Reply to newsboard please.

I suggest that you look at what each patch does, and only install ones
that seem relevant to your case. There are quite a lot that only apply
when running server software for example, or (like that one) in a
situation where some employee with limited rights wants to gain full
control. If in doubt, don't, even for so called critical updates. And
I would bypass any driver ones in favor of the latest versions from the
device maker's site, especially for video cards

Bad advice. Keep your system current and you won't have problems two years
from now because you want to install item X or that you must have level X
before you can install Y. I have installed every update to date including
the dreaded 811493 but, I don't have or use any virus detectors. Have a
little trust in MS.

Hi

This type of dependency is almost exclusively on a service pack level. And
downloading/installing hardware drivers from Windows Update I will never do
unless I really need a particular one and can't get it from the original
hardware manufacturer.
