View Full Version : Problems After Latest Update

A few days ago I installed the latest XP update (to make the systray
icon stop nagging me). Every since this update many programs don't
load or only after a loooooong delay.
Anybody else having this problem? Any fix?

Hi
Most likely caused by the 811493 update if you have installed it.
811493 is not working good on a lot of computers (MS is aware of this),
and you should remove it using Add/remove Programs in the Control Panel.
If you get a warning that other installs may stop working if you remove it,
just ignore it.
The 811493 fix is not critical really, it is rated as "Important" only by MS.
More here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811493
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-013.asp
e.g. this:
"For an attack to be successful, an attacker would need to be able to logon
interactively to the system, either at the console or through a terminal
session."
I am not going to install this fix on any computer...

Hi Jim
I've seen a few posts regarding a recent update
and causing slow boot-ups and slow apps load-ups.
If you're really sure that the updates have caused
the problem check for this particular one ......
Q817287: Critical Update (Catalog Database
Corruption in Microsoft Windows)
Check if you have installed this update by looking
on the windows update web site
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
a check installation history.
You could then do a system restore to revert back to
a date earlier than this installation. If this wasn't the
cause you can revert the system restore back to
your present situation - no problem.
Good luck

Thanks very much. That was one of the two updates I installed before
the problem began. I've removed it.

I put on 811493 this morning and have had no problems so far. I use
WindowsXP Home edition. I have downloaded all critical updates since
installation in January 2003.

You may be one of the lucky ones, Tom, but the slow-down effect doesn't
appear immediately.
Let it alone for a few days - but keep it in the back of your mind.
It may suddenly start after you have installed new software or made a major
change somewhere in your OS, which makes you think (erroneously) that your
new software has caused the problem.
