XP is not what's limiting you. It's the word processing
software that you will need to install onto XP OS in order
for your documents to retain their formatting. You'll need
to install WORD or some other program that will access your
existing documents.

No version of Windows has ever included Word, or any other
application software (unless you want to consider WordPad
application software). If your previous computer running Windows
98 came with Word, it wasn't that it came with Windows, it was
that your vendor chose to bundle it as part of the package he
sold you.

If you want Word, you can buy it, either alone, as part of
Microsoft Office, or as part of Microsoft Works Suite.
Alternatively you can buy another word processor such as
WordPerfect, or get StarOffice or OpenOffice.

One more thing if ya don't already know: Word Pad will
open your doc's if that's all you want. It will also
retain much of the formatting, although, not perfectly.
Generally speaking, most people could probably get by
using Word Pad to open their Doc's.

I am giving a slightly different answer to the already very helpful answers
you have received. If you have upgraded to XP on you original computer on
which you already had a Word programme, that Word programme will work and
your documents will work as usual. If you have acquired a new computer
running under XP and have copied all your Word ducuments onto that new
computer, then the answers you have received are spot on and you will indeed
need to acquire some Word software. Either Office which includes Word or
Microsoft Works which will deal with Word documents.
