Just connected a W D 200g 7200rpm 8mg ca. External HDD
It says I have to Partition the drive before I use it, so I'm letting XP do
it now, What exactly is it doing? And do I need to get any other Software
for it?? TIA

It (disk management, I assume) is chopping the disk up into one or more
logical pieces (partitions, or volumes) which you can then format (as
FAT32 or NTFS .. FAT32 being limited to 32GB) and use as 'drives'
(F:, G:, H:, whatever).

However with a drive this size (over 128GB (binary .. ~ 137Gb decimal))
you need 48bit LBA enabled to use the whole thing .. so if it won't
partition/format more than 128Gb, that'll be the problem.

Probably formatting the drive........i just added a USB 2.0 external to my
PC, add that to an 80gig WD internal. Xp should have asked how you wanted it
partitioned; i set 1 partition only, meaning the whole drive is one biggy..
No OS on it, i use it for storage only..
As for the question of whether you need any other software for it; What are
you using it for? Are you going to install an OS?.............
