I'm a bit old to be saying this, but DUH!

You have a incompatible (read older) printer and you are wondering why it
acts strange. You can buy new printers, on sale, at $49 bucks. Open your
wallet!

It will be incompatible if you have not found and installed the updated
driver off HP's website.

The most up to date drivers for the HP Deskject 69x series is already
included with Windows XP.

Just use the drivers that are built in.
