View Full Version : Managing/restricting users, Pro vs. Home

It appears the ability to truly manage and restrict users on XP Home is
*very* limited (inadequate IMO). Wish I would have known a few months ago
what I know now. Oh well...

Does XP Pro offer any better capabilities in this area? If so, what are
they? Anybody out there with XP Pro and a few kids they have setup and
restricted on the system? Anything you couldn't do? I'm considering an XP
Pro upgrade but I don't want to be disappointed again by marketing horse
puckey.

Thanks!

Consider purchasing Norton Internet Security 2004
and setup an account with parental controls of your choosing.
Visit http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/nis_pe/features.html.

Thanks, but internet access isn't the issue.

I want control of the PC in terms of managing what is installed and by who.
I don't want "limited users" installing or upgrading *anything*. Kids
aren't known for their ability to thoroughly research these things before
laying them down, and ultimately hosing the system.

I want the system admin to do it and to then determine who (everybody,
admins, specific users, etc.) gets access to the app.

Is XP Pro what I need to do this? W2K? This is basic system protection
IMO. With potentially multiple users on XP Home, not being able to at least
control installations is a severe flaw. A system per person is NOT an
option.

John,

In a stand alone or work group environment, Group Policies apply to all
users on the machine. You can work around this:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=293655

You can also see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Windows XP Security
Console, for a small utility I've written that allows you to apply a good
number of the restrictions available in the Group Policy Editor, on a
per-user basis. Version 1.4 is currently available, and version 2 will be
available soon with even more restrictions.
