Since downloading a recent set of XP patches I have lost
the ability to play 'wave' files.
How do I restore them ?

WMV files are not WAV files; they are Windows Media.
Open Windows Media Player, then click the FILE menu and browse to a .wmv
file, and open it. If it works, then all is well.
Perhpas the file association with WMV has not be made. This is how
WMPlayer opens automatically when a file that it handles is double-clicked.
In Media Player, click the TOOLS menu, then OPTIONS, then FILE TYPES tab.
Be sure that the WMV choice is enabled with a checkmark in its box.
