I am returning to the store a laptop where XP-pro was
installed on top of the original XP-home. I have
reinstalled XP-home from the recovery disks supplied with
the laptop.
Now, how do I deactivate XP-pro from this laptop so that I
can re-use my XP-pro on another machine?

There is no deactivation per se. When you attempt to activate the
installation on your other computer you may be directed to a
telephone activation method. Follow the instructions you receive.
It may require you to talk to a person to explain your situation.
The successful activation on the second computer effectively
deactivates any other copy on another computer.
There is an FAQ at the URL below:

Is it possible to transfer a license to another computer?
if you want to force a reactivation on the returned machine
open regedit.exe and goto: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup]
change: SetupType = 2
change: CmdLine = c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /f
add: OobeInProgress (dword) = 1
on reboot the user has to agree to the license, add a key etc..

Activation goes with the machine and not the owner of the software.
If you transfer a machine with an activated copy of Windows XP, the
software will remain activated. The registration, which is
optional, lies with the owner of the software. The only requirement
in transferring ownership of a computer with software is that you
transfer all media and literature to the new owner. The new owner
is then bound by the End User License Agreement. You cannot retain
the software to install on another machine unless you remove it from
the machine you are transferring. OEM software MUST remain with the
original machine on which it was installed.
