Screen Resolution Settings

I am running Windows XP Pro - (Version 5.1 Build 2600 xpsp2.030422-1633
Service pack 1)
Display = NEC MultiSync LCD 1830 on NVIDIA GeForce 2MX/MX400

My question:

I recently switched the screen resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 - at many
of the sites I go to the site doesn't use the complete desktop. ex.

www.msn.com leaves a 3' unused border on the right

www.nascar.com leaves about a 1.5" unused border on each side

www.jayski.com utilizes the whole screen, as do several other sites

With the 800x600 setting all sites utilized the whole desktop area. Is there
some other setting I need to adjust? OR, is this just the way it is?

This is because of the way the site was coded, to support people running
older screen resolution sizes. These sites are coded to fit into an 800x600
screen as many people still use the older screen resolution. If you have
yours set at 1024x768 and the page is coded to fit 800x600 then you get
"blank" area to the right of the screen. The page could be coded to size
automatically but then that messes with formatting and tables
setup/formatting, so its easier just to code it for 800x600 and leave the
space to the right or they center the page and have space to the left and
right. There's nothing you can do to change it.
BTW - I run at 1280x1024 and the msn website takes up about 1/2 the screen,
nascar centers with space on left and right.
