I mistakenly thought that my hard drive had been
corrupted because my HP PC was behaving so erratically. I
ran HP's non-destructive system recovery program which
restored the Windows XP OS on to the hard drive. As it
turns out my PC was misbehaving because of an over-
heating problem. Before all this happened I had set up
two accounts in XP, both password protected. When I
booted my PC after restoring the OS I noticed that I did
not get the usual password prompt to enter my account (or
alternatively, the guest account). Furthermore, I would
get an "access denied" whenever I tried to double click
on the C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\ folder. After
perusing this newsgroup I noticed a posting that pointed
to the microsoft knowledge base article - 308421 "How to
take ownership of a folder in XP" I booted in safe mode
and logged in as administrator and chenged the
protections per the instructions, I also noticed that I
could open the owner folder while in safe mode, so far so
good. However when I re-booted, I still got an "access
denied" message when I tried to open the owner folder. I
re-entered safe mode and copied a sub-folder of the owner
folder to another location on the hard drive, I rebooted
the machine in standard mode and confimed that I could
examine the contents of the re-located folder. SO far so
good, at least I have a "brute force" method for
recovering my data files. However, the other big issue is
now, whenever I try to start Microsoft Outlook or Word I
get the following message "This action is only valid for
products that are currently installed" (I have a legit
copy of MS Office XP standard installed on my PC). All
other applications that I had installed on my PC seem to
work fine, it is just the MS apps that aren;t working,
why would this be so? Should I try to re-install Office
XP, and if I do, will be able to recover all of the email
in my in-box, contact information, etc., etc..
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
