Title explains all. When I log on and get started, it
should open up c:\document and settings\username\desktop,
but something happened, and now it opens up as a desktop -
> c:\windows\desktop. It is as if Windows has ignored my
profile. MY quick launch bar is empty.

Background info:

I am logged in as computer administrator
There are no remote logins to this computer, its a home
computer

It sounds like your profile has become corrupted. Go to the User
Accounts applet in Control Panel and make a new user. Log into the new
account. Is everything all right there? If yes, then copy over your
data from the original account and delete it.

Quick Launch - Missing or Doesn't Function Properly

This behavior can occur if the Quick Launch folder has been deleted. To
resolve this issue, recreate the Quick Launch folder. Create a folder named
Quick Launch at the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
