This is a copy of my original posting, but since nobody
actually answered my question (but I found several people
to have the same problem) I'm going to repost until
somebody answers my question!! I'm not paying $30 to get
help with a simple question, so I hope somebody helps me
out here:

The following items failed to install:
q329441,810577,331953
I've tried multiple times, I've tried changing the
catroot file, I've enabled all the activeX controls and
disabled my antivirus software, and it still fails. I'm
currently running WinXP SP1, but the problem began before
I installed SP1. I was hoping installing SP1 would help
the problem. What do I do now?

Hi

Please note that there is a newsgroup specifically for these issues
microsoft.public.windowsupdate

If you are using the "crummy" Web interface:
http://communities.microsoft.com/Newsgroups/default.asp?ICP=MSCOM&sLCID=US&newsgroup=microsoft.public.windowsupdate

It is the catroot2 folder (not file) that needs to be renamed or deleted. You
also say "tried", if you did try to rename the catroot2 folder, did you
succeed, or did you end up with "Access denied"?

Anyway, check your "windows update.log" file for specific error code (the log
file is in your windows folder) and take look at this Web page:

Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Also check if there exist a log file for the specific updates, e.g. 331953.log
or Q331953.log
