Updates fail - and I don't think I'm alone here!

I forgot to add, I've looked in the windows update log
file, and found error messages that the Windows update
troubleshooter had no answer to. Here is the most common
error:
See iuhist.xml for details: Install finished (Error
0x80070052: The directory or file cannot be created.)

Also:
Library download error. Will retry. (Error 0x80072EFD)
Already tried all proxies. Will not retry. (Error
0x80004005: Unspecified error)

Install failure 0x80070052 may be due to a known issue with mapped drivers.
Disconnect all network drives and install again to see if that fixes the
problem.

Windows Update requires that port 80 and 443 is open for incoming and
outgoing traffic.

Hi Thom,

The 0x80072EFD error is typically caused by 3rd party interference or
connection settings. Please try bypassing your firewall and anti virus
software. Also try the following steps:

HTTP 1.1 Settings: (Play around with these settings)

1. Open Internet Explorer click Tools / Internet Options.
2. Click the Advanced Tab
3. Remove the check from use HTTP 1.1
4. Place a check in Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections
5. Attempt to access the Windows Update site again
6. If you are still unable to install updates, try having both HTTP 1.1
and HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections checked.
7. Under Security, select one of the following check boxes:
- SSL 2.0
- SSL 3.0
8. Click OK.
9. Quit Internet Explorer
10. Retry Windows Update

Please try adding *.microsoft.com and *.windowsupdate.com to the sites
that does not use the proxy server.

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click on Tools from the top menu bar
3. Click on Internet Options
4. Click on the Connections tab
5. Click on LAN Settings
6. Click on the Advance Button
7. Add *.microsoft.com and *.winupdate.com to "Do not use proxy server
for addresses beginning with:"

If there is already something typed in this box, you will have to type a
semicolon ";" before *.microsoft.com.

Can you please check the "Automatically Detect Settings" in Internet
Explorer.
Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN
Settings
Please disable the "Automatically Detect Settings" option, If enabled or
Enable if disabled.
Close Internet Explorer and try again. If unchecking this option made no
difference please set it back to the original setting.
