View Full Version : Stolen laptop - able to deactivate/reuse XP?

Elliot

My laptop was stolen that had XP-home installed. Is there
anyone at Microsoft that I could inform so that they could
restrict the thief's use of update services, etc?

Also, is it possible for me to reuse the software on
another computer, or will it be not allowed because it was
previously activated on the stolen laptop?

Thanks,
Elliot

Greetings --

Have you reported the theft to your local law enforcement agencies
and your insurance company? There's nothing Microsoft can do in this
situation.

If the version of WinXP Home that was on the laptop was an OEM
version, then your license to use WinXP was stolen along with the
laptop. OEM licenses, once installed, are not transferable to another
computer under any circumstances.

Elliot;
There is no way for Microsoft to deactivate as you ask.

As long as your Windows XP is retail and you have the CD, Product Key
etc, you can install it on another computer.
Worst case is a 5 minute toll free call to Microsoft.

If Windows XP is OEM, then it was effectively stolen with the laptop
regardless what you have.
Include the OS with the insurance claim.

Yes, XP was included on the laptop by the manufacturer. I
did file an insurance claim, but the deductible is high.

Even if I can't benefit from the XP CDs that came with the
laptop, too bad microsoft couldn't do something to
restrict the thief's usage. Might help reduce amount of
laptop theft.

Thanks for the replies.

Elliot;
In a case such as yours it would be nice if Microsoft could deactivate
Windows or better yet trace the computer.
Perhaps in the future...
Although I think that would involve many privacy issues.

If you got the CD, he will likely have to at least buy a replacement
at some time.
Then again, the person is a thief...

MS being able to deactivate it would do little good. There are pirated
copes of XP "corporate edition" all over on the warez scene. At worst they
might have to spend a couple hours downloading it. :-(

I would think that More laptop manufacturers would start
doing what IBM does with there labtops and put a security
chip built in so if a stolen labtop goes on the internet
they can notify johnny law right where it is I do hope all
laptops manufacturers do this some day as it would at
least let you get the labtop back

IBM announced this year what it calls "secure" notebooks
which are equipped with Asset ID, a "radio frequency-based
security and asset tracking technology". Lets hope other
makers soon follow suit.
