View Full Version : Q811493 et al - borks my BIOS??

Did the update, and discovered that upon booting the PC, immediately things
come to a near-halt in slowness. We can barely enter BIOS setup, and when we
can, pressing a key we end up waiting on screen redraw before the keystroke
is recognized. Talk about SLOW. Something is clearly borked here, because
all this starts immediate upon boot up and long before XP even begins to
load.
Using a Gateway GP7-800 (P3/800), IDE drives, XP Pro - all patched up.
Things we have done:
Removed all 3 of those patches - no change
Defragmented the HD, no change
Turned off Norton AV Pro, reinstalled - no change
Uninstalled - no change
Defragmented again - still no change.
Next step? Reformat HD and reinstall XP Pro...
Would sure like to avoide reformating/installing XP and the various Apps.
Seems this latest patch installs more than just the 3 patches - I am curious
what changes or files got installed that would affect the initial boot up
and bork the BIOS???
Hopefully M/Soft will have a fix ASAP -
Any suggestions, appreciated.

Any problems you've got that happen when you switch the system on and affect
even working in the bios are ~nothing~ to do with any fix you've downloaded
from Microsoft.
You might want to check that you haven't got a failed processor heat sink
fan or something like that.

Thanks but I tend to disagree because the moment we installed the patch,
things got borked. But will check around the computer see what I can find..
This is simply way tooo conicidental

I understand why you are suspicious if it all happened together but none the
less there is nothing in a security update that would cause your computer to
run incorrectly while windows itself is not running.

This is a patch within Windows and can do nothing to slow down the
BIOS sectionb of the boot.
Something else may have come up at that time.
What File System? FAT 32 or NTFS?
The issue seems to be a conflict with Windows Update 811493 and
antivirus applications.
Similar issues reported with McAfee, Norton, EZ Trust and possibly
others.
Here are a few basic ideas (some seem to have solved the issue for
some people)
Uninstall 811493 from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.
Is performance back to normal?
Update antivirus
Reboot.
Disable everything especially antivirus before installing (SOP for
installations).
Ensure AV Autoprotect is disabled.
Reinstall 811493.
Reboot.
Try computer again.
Microsoft has stated they are working on the cause, so hopefully we
will get some definitive solution real soon.

I also installed this patch and all programs became slow
to lost applications. I restored back to before I
installed and now everything is OK. I will not reinstall
that patch.

There is *no* way an OS patch can affect the BIOS or the part of the boot where
the OS is not started yet...

Glad you could restore, we attempted that and it failed on the restore...
DAMN... And we are meticulous about keeping only current up to date s/ware,
AV, XP, ZA, etc etc. -- will try to reflash the BIOS end of of the week and
see. (though have never messed with BIOS before on this PC - it is a stock
Gateway desktop)..... Maybe it is time to get a new BIOS with more features
than the Phoenix V 6 used by Gateway....
