View Full Version : Installing 95 in a new partition

Please don't laugh at this....I have some old DOS application
programs which will not work properly in anything newer
than Windows 95. I have an 80GB hard drive which
came with XP Home on it. I have Partition Magic 8 and
am able to partition that hard drive.
I bought a sealed, original OEM Windows 95 and would
like rather detailed instructions of how to install it in
a partition on my hard drive. I am very nervous about
protecting everything which is now in what will be
the XP partition.
Thank you.

William,
The documentation that comes with PM is very good, and detailed. You will
need to use PMs Boot Magic to accomplish the dual boot with 95 if XP is
using NTFS.
Are you sure the software won't run on 98 or in XPs compatibility mode? I
doubt you can find 95 drivers for a system if it was designed for XP.

Thanks, Michael. The programs involve an APL language system,
with the special fonts and drivers, and it does work in 95. And
I tried the compatibility mode and it didn't play. I tried the APL
under 95 on another machine and it does work. I'd like it on
this machine, in its own partition. But I have to make sure that
when I install it, it doesn't disturb the XP partition. By th way, the
OEM 95 set that I bought, tells how to install it from windows version(s)
earlier than 95, or from DOS......I am hoping to receive instructions
on how to install it in a partition which, using PM, could be set up
to be NTFS, or FAT of various numbers....

Unless it is Win 95 b, it will have to be set up on its own fat16 partition.
Win95 did not use fat32. The PM Boot Magic pdf manual is very detailed and
covers it very well. I don't believe you will find better documentaion than
the PM users manual.
It explains everything in simple terms.

One other point to consider: an 80GB XP machine has (new) hardware that you
might not be able to find drivers for 95. As your software was not
compatible with XP, your (designed for XP) hardware probably does not have
driver support for 95. Before installing 95 in a partition you might want to
research that. Good Luck
