View Full Version : Replacing Corrupted DLL Files

Running XP, I have 2 crucial but corrupt files:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WINSTA.DLL and
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RESTORE\RSTRUI.EXE

These are the WINSTATION Library and the SYSTEM RESTORE
executable.

I do not know how these became corrupted. I have been
trying to update the software for my HP5300C Scanner
again. That is, it was working for months and then it
just died on me. I have been regularly updating the OS
with Windows Update. I have also been using the product
"System Mechanic" which might have something to do with
this.

Since I have a duplicate XP OS Pro installed on a Notebook,
I copied the pristine copies of the relevant files to a
floppy and then I tried to update these archived files.
Even when I used ATTRIB to remove all of the flags,
I am unable to delete either of these because I lack
access. This is curious since I am logged on as the System
Administrator.

My question is 2 fold. First, is it conceptually accurate
to think that the RSTRUI.EXE and WINSTA.DLL files on my
Notebook can simply be applied on the Desktop to solve this
problem? If so, how do I defeat the automatic replacement
mechanism that refuses to let me delete or replace both
of these files.

I appreciate the help, particularly if it works.

These are on my desktop. I have a Notebook that is running
the same OS, the pro ed. of XP.
