Hi,

I got this problem.. that is a real mind twister! I took a few pics, I
encrypted them….then I had to format my hard drive. Going back into
the pics it wont let me view them.. due to no certificate
authentification! Its says that I have a private key that corresponds
to this certificate (previous one). And I don't…The CA root is not
trusted blah blah and so on….I am suppose to install this certificate
(which I don't have) in the trusted root certificate Authorities
store! Why can I not add the current certificate to this so that I
can view my pics.. It always says error in adding new user error code
5.. The old certificate is from Dec 02.. Is it possible to get around
this.. I mean if I cannot add the new to old.. Can I make my current
certificate exactly the same as the old one. So that I can access the
pics. Knowing that I will be able to access my other pics because I
havent encrypted any more pics because of this problem.

Regards Kam

Kam;
You are trying to open a back to a very secure system that has no back
door.

Are you sure it is not an Ownership issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q308421&

If the files are encrypted.
If you did not back-up the encryption key or the Recovery Agent and
are not on a domain, the files are as good as gone.
This must be accomplished while you have access to the files.

If you can restore the original profile (not recreate) you may be able
to recover the data.
Recreating profiles and passwords is irrelevant.
Contact Microsoft if you can restore the profile.
Or:

EFS is very good at what it does and there is no back door.
Read and understand these links before using EFS to keep from
permanently losing your data:
