View Full Version : Can't Access My Local Network

I am using Windows XP Professional. I have followed the
directions for setting up a Home Office Network. However,
on one of my two computers, when I attempt to view the
network computers I get the following message:

"The network is not accessable. You may not have
permission to use this network resource."

I am the only person who uses these computers so how can
I not have permission to access my own network?

I have read Technical Article # 304040 which acknowledges
that Windows XP has a problem with allowing access but
the instructions to fix the problem aren't clear.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

What type of Network? Wireless? Ethernet? What is the topology? Are you
"routing" through one of the machine to get to the internet or do you have a
bridge/router on the ethernet that all the machines can see? Are all of
them XP?

If you are ethernet and have a router that all machines can access, is it
giving out DHCP addresses correctly?

From a command prompt, do an "IPCONFIG"
To open a command prompt, do the following (sorry if you know this)
[Start] --> Run...
in the RUN dialog, type in "cmd" and hit return
this will bring up the black "DOS Box"
type "IPCONFIG" and hit return

You should get something this back:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : computername.yourisp.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

The important part is the IP Address... if you have a working router, then
you should get something like 192.168.0.? If it is something random, then
either you have a direct connection from that machine to your ISP or your
router isn't working.

to see if you have a working router, type "ping www.google.com". You should
see an aswer like

Pinging www.google.com [216.239.37.99] with 32 bytes of data:

if it resolves the address (216.239.37.99) then you have a valid connection
to the internet.

Anyway, there are so many things that could be wrong... lets start with what
you have and work from there.
