My 9 month old Gateway laptop has stopped booting up.
I have always stayed current on "Windows Updates"
and "Norton Antivirus Updates." I talked to a Gateway
tech., who concluded that I needed to reinstall
everything, thus forfieting any data I have. Not the
answer I wanted.
I've been to Kelly's Korner who addresses my problem @
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_sys32.htm
The message that applies to me is this:
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry
cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32
\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate
I followed the instructions for the fix. My problem is
that I get to a point using the "Recovery Console" tool
described in Kelly's-Korner where it asks for the
Administrator Password. I am the Administrator, and sole
user of my laptop. I have purposely never assigned a
password to my laptop. But it will not let me enter
without a password.
I've tried hitting "enter" leaving the password blank,
like I used to while logging on when it was still working.
But after 3 attempts, It prompts me to restart the
computer, and we start the cycle all over again.
Needless to say, I am very frustrated.
Can anyone please help?
