No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904&
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.
This will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.
Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Jupiter,
Are you absolutely sure that WinXP firewall doesn't work
with AOL? Per your advice, I contacted AOL support and
they said that all versions of windows works with AOL and
that I would have to either contact my computer vendor or
firewall provider. (No help, but can't refuse free year
of access.)
I originally thought that maybe I had spyware on my
computer, but the 3 pops in question only appear after I'm
on line for about an hour or so. (Next step will be
investigating spyware programs). Per ad, to 'supposedly'
end future receipt of ad, click OK, but assume if I do,
will then get spyware. Is it possible I have spyware
installed?
Lastly, could you please further elaborate on your
instructions for disabling messenger service. When I
installed the WinXP firewall, I followed MS instructions
to go into Network Connections and disable from the
properties box of the modem. When I did this, it 'does'
show in the description that both the modem & AOL are, in
fact, firewalled, although this is not helping??? When I
followyour instructions to go through control panel, it
says that the Messenger Service is not related to Windows
Messenging. I guess I want to know what the difference
between the two messenger services are, and if I follow
your instructions, will I disable my virus alert & windows
update programs running in system bar?
Sorry so long, but I'm new to all this.
Many thanks,
Janis
PS-Why don't these newsgroups have a archive search
feature? It's really difficult to search 850 pages page
by page and this is only 1 support group!

Janis;
As far as I know the propriety nature of AOL is incompatible with
Internet Connection Firewall (ICF).,
There have been countless reports of this.
I attempted to locate a link, but could not immediately locate it.
Windows XP works with AOL. just not ICF.
3rd party firewalls will work with AOL.
To disable Messenger Service:
Click Start, Click Control Panel, click Administrative Tools (or click
Performance & Maintenance, then click Administrative Tools).
Double click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under "Start-up Type" select "Disabled" from drop down menu.
Click OK and follow prompts
Regularly run one of these to help keep spyware away:

Greetings --
AOL has deliberately made their software incompatible with WinXP's
firewall. AOL's proprietary connection applet is deliberately
designed to preclude your setting/adjusting any of its properties, to
include enabling/disabling WinXP's firewall, which is
connection-specific. This is normally of little consequence to most
AOL users, as all are protected from the real Internet behind AOL's
own firewall. Remember, AOL is _not_ an Internet Service Provider;
they're an On-Line Content Provider. Two very different things.
Contact AOL's tech support for resolution of problems with (or
caused by) their product.
You'll need to search the Internet for a firewall application
that's compatible with AOL. I believe ZoneAlarm is.
