Dear Ron

This is correct you need to re-install the windows again.
There is one way in windows 2000 that u can install the os
with lossing the data.

When you run the setup then it will ask the for the
partation in hich you want to install the os select the
partation but you do not format the partation.
in windows 2000 there is one option that leave the current
partation (intact data only) when you select this option
it will never format the paration and install the new
system file. This was one method if windows xp is having
that option. Now in your laptop if u have two partation
and partation is free then you can install the windows XP
in that partation that after insallation you will get your
data back.

Please tell me via mail incase any problem
