Okay, here's the dealio: a lady from my church asked me
to come look at her computer. During boot, on the black
Windows XP Home screen, the computer will reboot. This
is a Gateway machine that is no longer under warranty.
When I use the OS disk that came with the machine and
attempt to get to the repair console it asks for a
password. Here's the kicker; the person that set the
password, her husband, passed away within the last six
months in a car accident and no one knows this password.
Is there a way to work around this? Gateway indicates
they would not have set this password and he must have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The user and not Gateway set a password if there is a password.

If you can reboot to Safe Mode and get to Administrator but you have
issues with Recovery Console see this link:

Reboot the computer tapping F8 about once a second.
At menu, choose "Last known good configuration"

Otherwise a Repair Installation should fix the reboot issue:
