View Full Version : Folder changes are VERY slow

OS: XP Prof; Office 2002; Intel 2.4GH; 512MB memory

Moving from one folder to another takes at least 10
seconds; (e.g., click on drop down list box arrow for
Look In: -- look in area goes blank and nothing happens
for 10 seconds or longer)

On my other computer with Win2000 Prof, 800 MH, 256MB
memory Office 2000 changes are instanesous.

What do I need to tweak?

Thanks, thanks, thanks!

How do you have your views set in Windows Explorer? Thumbnail view, as well
as "grouped" views takes much longer to display. And folders with hundreds
or thousands of files takes longer as well. This also affects dialog boxes
that display the folder trees, such as open/save and move to/copy to.

This is just bad design, because category grouping and thumbnail views is
useless, unless you've got great patience. I used to have my MP3 collection
grouped by artist in detail view. There are about 3000 files in this folder,
and it takes several minutes before the disk stops thrashing. And I'm on a
P4 3.0c w/2GB DDR 400 with 2 x 120GB SATA drives.

Thanks for your idea of checking on thumbnail
presentation and grouped documents.
Neither handled the problem, however, the suggestion
jogged me to look at the folder settings once again, and
I removed the setting for "Automatic search for network
folders and printers." That did it. Now switching
between folders on my pc is a snap.
Thanks.
