View Full Version : printer driver / XP problem

Here's my little question of the day:
I have installed a new computer for a client of mine,
independent of the other office network. This new PC is
XP (SP1) based and set up as a multi user workstation,
some with limited permissions. All this is fine and runs
A-OK. The problem I am faced with is the inclusion of a
printer, that was hooked up to the old computer which was
W98 based. This printer, a very expensive and excellent
Toshiba DP 2460, needs to be connected, as it is the only
printer in the vicinity. Unfortunately no XP or W2k
drivers are available - and I have checked fairly widely
(me thinks). The client is in no mood to fork out another
4 digit sum for a new printer and really would like this
printer to be up and running under XP. Now, I had a look
at the W98 driver, and it does load up under XP, but
then, right at the end, it tells me it's missing a file
without specifying which file (otherwise I could try and
locate it). As a guess, I have a feeling it's looking for
a file called TECPRT.DLL, because when trying to manually
install the driver (through its exe) it can't copy that
file. Looks like XP is using the same file (in system32)
but perhaps of a different version, and won't let me
replace the existing file, which seems only fair enough.
Now then, does anyone know of a way to "trick" XP into
excepting a non-XP driver - or perhaps a way to "trick" a
W98 driver into installing to XP?
I know I can run a non XP exe in compatibility mode
(properties | compatibility), but don't think this
applies to driver software.
So far the only other idea I've got is to use an old W98
box with just a base network install on it and run the
printer though this one via a network and let the XP box
share it with the W98 box. Seems a long way around the
problem and not a particularly reliable option, either
(haven't done this one). Besides, I think under XP I can
only use the shared printer as a copy, otherwise XP will
still ask for a driver which I can't supply ...
I hope the above makes sense. All help and advice would
be much appreciated.

Hartmut,
off hand I see two possiblities:
First, Toshiba does have an 2k/XP driver for the DP2570 model; it may
or may not work with your model. You can download it from
http://www.eid.toshiba.com/support/drivers/driverfiles/dp2570-3580/winxp/kr7009-15v200Win2kxp.exe
If this does not work, try to install the driver for an HP LaserJet.
From what I can find, the Toshiba printers seem to understand HP's
PCL. The manual for the printer should be give you more details on
which PCL version (PCL4, PCL5 etc.) it will work with. This may not
give you access to each and every feature, but it should at least make
the printer usable.

Thanks Cari;
yes, I knew this isn't the "correct" ng, but thought I
might try and increase my chances for answers.
Thanks anyway - Hartmut
