I've selcted the "Hide Inactive Icons" but they remain
visable & I've lost the double arrow to expand/ruduce the
notification area. Any ideas?

Right click a blank area of Taskbar and unmark "Lock the Taskbar" if
checkmarked. Right-click a blank area in the Systray, then click on
"Customize Notifications...". In resulting dialog box, scroll through list
of items and their status to the right. To change, click on a particular
item; this gets a shaded area around its current status with a down-pointing
triangle to the right. Click on the triangle, then click on what's wanted
in drop-down. OK, then Apply and OK to set and close. Right click a blank
area of Taskbar again and mark "Lock the Taskbar".
