I just installed Win Xp and I get a choice of 2 ways to
start windows everytime I boot-up:Windows XP Home version
or Microsoft Windows. I choose Xp,of course, and it boots
up fine. When I choose the the other I see a Win 98 logo
for split secound and a blank screen with the bilinking
white cursor. I would like to know how to get a straight
boot-up without choices. I have already tried the boot.ini
approach without luck. Please help

Gary the boot ini file is the problem. However you say you have tried this
without any success? Go to control panel>system>advanced tab>startup and
recovery. Click the Settings button. In the startup and recovery window look
at the default operating system box. Does it read Microsoft windows xp
Professional /fastdetect? If you have home edition it may say Home instead
of Professional. If it does then your system is set to boot from windows xp.
If something else is in the box like Microsoft Windows then this win 98 that
you speak of is the default operating system to boot to.
Firstly what you need is the Windows XP showing in the box. If it isn't then
click the arrow on the right of the box and if you see windows xp in the
drop down box click on it. This now makes win xp the default operating
system. Once you have this option in the deafult operating system box take a
look at the next item down - Time to dispaly list of operating systems.
Change this to 0 (zero). Finally click OK At the next screen press Apply
followed by OK and then exit control panel. Now reboot. What should happen
now is that a) the menu disappears and b) windows xp boot straight up. This
is, perhaps the easiest way of getting around the problem. Perhaps if you
sent me a copy of your boot ini file i might be able to spot what the
problem is. If you do decide to email me a copy of the boot ini remove the
obvious no spam from my email address.

By "tried the boot.ini approach," I take it you set the timeout to 0
(zero)? Or did you delete the list of operating systems?
Your boot.ini should look very much like this (there might be slight
differences as I have XP Pro):
[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Hi Gary,
Start/run C:\boot.ini
Remove the unwanted reference from the [operating systems] section. Then
close saving changes.
