One of the recent XP updates put ASP.net as a user on my
computer. Since it is a Microsoft product, I would think
I could find out something about this from Microsoft but
have not turned up anything in the Knowledge Base.

Does anyone know why this user was installed and what its
purpose is? Also, are there any ramifications to deleting
the user? And, finally, is there a way to turn it off if
there is some overriding criteria to keep it on the
computer?

My guess is that it will provide Microsoft limited but
uninhibited access to my computer. Additionally, I like
my PC to come up on its own without having to log in or
click the stupid Welcome screen icon. Any ideas there?

Thanks.

Do you know which update provided this functionality? ASP.NET is used if
you have IIS installed on your machine and you server IIS web pages. If you
do not have IIS on the machine the account may not be needed.

It seems the Framework v1.1 install is doing this, on Home or=20
Pro, although I have not verified as I have IIS 5.1 on all my XP

Try using TweakUI from the PowerToys to hide this from=20
the Welcome screen.
The account is used to locally run some aspects of .Net=20
applications. Presently I am confused as to why it is being=20
installed when IIS is not present. Normally this is an account=20
used by IIS for the worker process(s) where aspx is hosted.

If I were you I would not worry about it, nor think in terms=20
of dark plans against your privacy. We have this account on=20
IIS servers where it is in a form that was quite scrutinized =20
during the beta/test period.
