Programs disappear

I installed windows xp to a client and he claims that his running programs
disappear. He says that his excel spreadsheet will close without saving and
just disappear. Has anyone heard of this happening with windows xp? The user
is using office 2000 and also has an older version of Lotus 123 (version 7 I
believe).

That sounds more like a virus to me.
