I run checkdisk about once a month on my laptop with XP
Home. About two weeks ago, it suddenly started to freeze
in the middle of the process, when the box
reads :Checking compressed files. At this point the
taskbar has three segments green. I've waited (one time
overnight) to see if it will finally work. No dice. I
always wind up having to re-boot. Any ideas? Thanks.

Brian Livingston (InfoWorld) posted a regedit quick fix and completely does
away with the "checking of compressed files" when running Disk Cleanup. I
have gone to all my customers, and have made this simple change to all
Win2K/WinXP workstations and servers.

The fix:

Run regedit and drill down as follows:
HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Expllorer > Volume
Caches > Compressed Old Files

On the right hand panel, find a field called 'Default'. Double click it.
then blank out the value data field (should start with B5...') associated
with the key. Note: do NOT delete the actual Default key, just the data
field in it.

Close Regedit and rerun Disk Cleanup. No rebooting necessary.
