For Windows XP Home and Professional (32-bit Edition) - 4Gb is the maximum
and useable limit.
The 64-bit Edition of Windows XP Professional can address and make full use
of 16Gb

Note however that your computer may only support some much lower number even
though XP is willing to run more.

YMMV...

With Windows 98 it was 2GB. With 32-bit Windows XP, it's 4GB.

The motherboard is now the limiting factor, most do not
support more than 2 GB.

Check your motherboard manual/website.

Also, have you priced those 1 GB DDR sticks?

Thanks to all. I'll be fine with what I want. I'll just add 512 to my
existing 256.
