I just purchased a new Gateway computer with Windows XP.
I had an Outlook Express on my old computer. When I got
my new computer I tried to spell check an e-mail through
Outlook Express. I can't spell check a e-mail. ABC spell
check is greyed out on my tool bar. How can I fix this

OE does not have a spell checker built in. It uses the one in Word, Excel,
Works Suite, or a third party. You must have one of these installed to have
a spell checker in OE.

Outlook Express uses the spelling checker provided with the following Microsoft Office programs:
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs
installed, the Spelling command is not available.
Have a look here for a free Spell Checker:

the link below provides a fix if you have any MS Offcie word program on your
computer. I just fixed mine a few minutes ago and it works great.

Neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever
come with a Spell Checking facility. Outlook Express uses the
spell checker that comes with Microsoft Word, (or another
Microsoft Office program) if you have it installed.
If you don't have Word or Office installed, you probably don't
have a spell checker. However there are several downloadable
freeware/shareware alternative spell checkers that work with
Outlook Express and Outlook. Since I have no personal experience
with any of these, I'll let someone else recommend one.
On the other hand, if a Microsoft Office component *is*
installed, try the instructions at
