Do any new PC manufacturers include the actual XP OS on CD anymore? Just
wondering if most are like HP which just installs on a hidden partition.
Thank you, Steve T.

I just got a new HP for my parents. They provided the Recovery files on a
hard drive partition and tools for making Recovery CD's out of those files.
But in the root of the C drive, they also included the i386 folder, which as
very nice of them.

We buy Dells and they all come with a XP CD with Dell's name on it.

If you go and have one built for you, you can get a Microsoft OEM disk.

The majority of small, build-to-order shops will give you a Windows XP disk.
There seems to be a split with the big manufacturers with some using the
hidden partition, and the others giving you a "system restore disk", which
is only marginally better than a hidden partition. You can order your
system from the small shops without an operating system installed. You are
then free to install what you want.

I have a win98 system, from defunct Quantex; which came with all of the OS
disks. But I also have an HP, with XP in a hidden partition. HP sent me the
"restore disks" for about $10 but only offered to sell me the XP OS as
regular retail. I was just curious what the other large vendors were doing.

Strange isn't it? The more you pay for a computer, the more likely it is
that the manufacturer will have saved himself a few cents by refusing to
supply a CD.

And the more you beg them to supply one, the more they will protest that
"there's no demand for it".

How very kind of them to provide you with the tools to do their job for
them!

Maybe Ford will start delivering their cars in bits next, and no doubt
you'll be telling everyone it's very nice of them to supply a toolkit!

I already own full copies of Windows XP Home and Pro. So I didn't really
care about getting the CD. But since they provide the i368 folder it just
makes it easier.

Most, if not all, of the major national OEMs either do what HP
does or give you a restore CD. Actual installation CDs are rare.

However, you can also have a computer built to your
specifications by a local builder. It's usually a much better
choice than the big OEMs, and almost always comes with a generic
OEM installation CD.

Times PC in the UK is Hell.

While they have a recovery partition, you must buy a £60 support
package to get the CD(s) to use the restore partiton. This is
anecdotal, based on Times PC users that posted here and other groups.
