1 G RAM
120 G HDD, floppy drive, DVD RAM drive, CD ROM drive
XP Home SP1, all updates installed

I discovered, quite by accident, that neither my DVD RAM drive nor CD ROM
drive are visible after returning from Standby mode.

The system had been in Standby mode, I reactivated it and placed a CD in
drive D (the DVD RAM drive) in order to install a program. Nothing happened.
So, I went to "My Computer" to start the CD from there. I was surprised to
see that the only drives for which icons were available were the HDD and the
floppy drive. The DVD RAM drive and the CD ROM drive were also missing from
the Device Manager and did not show up in Windows Explorer.

I rebooted and the drive icons reappeared, ditto for info in Device Manager
and Windows Explorer; put computer in Standby mode and the drives
disappeared again. In short, if I don't use the Standby mode, all my drives
show up and work normally. If I use Standby, the D and E drive icons vanish
and the drives do not function (except to open or close when I push the
appropriate external eject buttons).

I've searched Google for an answer but have come up dry. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Your computer needs to be completely Windows XP ACPI compliant for all your
system to work well with standby and other power related features. Upgrade
your BIOS or remove any older hardware from the box.
