View Full Version : Serious virus problem

Hi, just wondering if anyone else has encountered this
problem and if they have any more information on it. The
other day (Saturday I believe, interestingly it hit on the
same day as the old CIH virus) I noticed some strange
behavior from my machine.

- The first thing I noticed was that clicking on the IE
icon on my desktop launched a download for a supposed
Microsoft Money update. Since I do have Money on my
machine but I never use it I chose to cancel. The window
popped up twice more before finally launching IE.

- After shutting down and logging back on, I noticed that
the icons associated with the users on the log on screen
had been changed to a picture of chess pieces.

- When I logged in, I opened the start menu and noticed
that over half of the programs which normally appeared
there were missing. In addition, the Games, Entertainment,
System Tools, and Communications folders
under "Accessories" were all emptied. I searched for the
executables for the programs normally associated with
these folders and did not find some of them, such as
Calculator and System Restore. I did not check to see if
they had been hidden, though.

If anyone has any idea what this might be please share
with me. It has not corrupted any media files, and the
programs I use frequently still work as designed but there
is clearly a big issue here.

Thanks,
Karl
