My hard drive has crashed and I'm going to have to
reinstall my Windows XP Pro Upgrade on a clean drive.
What do I need to do to install the UPGRADE when there's
no existing version and what do I need to do to re-
register my software?

You have to have a previous qualifying version--either installed
or on a CD. You presumably fall into the latter situation. Just
insert the previous qualifying version's CD as proof of ownership
when prompted to do so.

Registration wasn't required in the first place, and
reregistration certainly isn't. What you need to do is
re-*activate* it. Just do so. Nothing special is required; if the
hardware is otherwise the same it should work as it did the first
time.

Boot to the xp cd, follow on screen instructions, when asked insert your
win98 cd as proof, install of xp continues.
You do not have to register, it is always optional.
Activation is mandatory, but will go thru as normal or you'll be prompted to
call ms and get activated.
