When manually installing a Network device driver a list of vendor
names should appear. A list of two vendors is shown, many many more
are missing.
How do I restore this list without reinstalling XP??

Untic the "Show Compatible Hardware", Then entire vendor
list for the category will be shown.

I don't see any check box for "show compatable hardware".

When you update drivers in this fashion, the steps are
Open Device Manager, Click Device,Driver, Update
Drivers. Install from a Specific List or Location.
Don't Search, I will choose the Driver to Install
"At this point the Show Compatible Hardware Appears"

The steps you outlined seem to apply only to when an existing driver
is installed, correct??
This is a first time driver install for an SMC NIC. The hardware was
detected once or twice in the Other category. From this comment you
can tell that I have attempted installing this NIC and it's driver
many times.
Have tried installing an XP driver from CD before and after hardware
was inserted in the PCI slot.
One time during the many attempts to install the NIC did the vendor
list display many many vendor names. This was one chance I had to
select the SMC vendor and the appropriate card so as to upgrade to the
new driver software off CD.
