Thank you everyone for leading me in the right direction. The frustrating
thing about this kind of a problem is the problem won't let the solution be
applied.
(The error message kept telling me "Datalog Database Corruption in Microsoft
Windows XP")
In any case the Knowledge Base article 817753 had me apply a work around
from the command prompt:
del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log
