Someone was screwing with the computer of a friend of
mine and somehow managed to get the computer to start to
the comand prompt where it would ask for a password.
They set the password to something we don't know. Any
ideas as to 1) what in the world this is and 2) how in
the world we can get around it?

Andrew;
I seems more likely it is a BIOS password.
If it is a desktop, there is normally a jumper on the motherboard to
clear the password.
If it is a laptop, contact the manufacturer.
Also check the manual.
