are the inaccessible file created around a particular time?
or is this inaccessiblity restricted to folders alone. can
you access efs files that were created before and after the
create times in properties?

are the files that are inaccessible created after
installing sp1 in xp? is your current install running with
sp1? sp1 updates the encryption algorithum. *possibly* the
problem.

were the inaccessible file created before a password change?

Sorry, I was missing a detail: I was wrong with the assumption that
everything was encrypted. Only a few folders were. That's why the
ownership-solution freed most of the files. Only those folders encrypted are
inaccessible now (or to be more exact: can't be encrypted).

Ah, ok, haven't updated to sp1 yet with the new installation. I will try
this. And yes I changed the user and admin-password after the encryption.
And I just realized that I also changed the computers name (since it's part
of the certificate, maybe that's a problem too?)

Thanks a lot again for the detailed help. I will go on with a new
installation, sp1 and the old computername and password and say hello again
if I can see if it's working.

Greetings!

sounds like the pfx import may not of been "successful"

did you export the private key when you created the .pfx -
does it say you have a private key that corresponds to this
(public) certificate in certificates mmc? did you include
all certificates in the cetificate path if possible when
you exported?

since you still have your orginal documents and settings
folder you may want to have a read of this.

Another user allready pointed me to your site! But goes way to deep into
things I don't have a clue about...

Now... yes it was the only available key to export at that time. and yes it
says I have a private key that corresponds to the pblic certificate.

Now I dicovered another strange thing: Logged on as admin with the
admin-ownership windows denies access to encrypted files also I imported the
certificate. Now I tried to log on as "Peter Heilrath" (took ownership back
to "Peter Heilrath" and imported the certificate): Now windows decrypts but
the result is just chaos (looks like real random charakters). So Windows
obviously assumes that it has the right key now, but decrypts wrong?!

Ok, time to say thank you again! Finally I could restore all data! Last
obstacle was probably sp1!

Don't know what to say else. Peter, anytime you need a lawyer in Germany -
send me an email!

Greetings,

Peter.
