When visiting some websites with discussion forums etc. I
notice that my IP-address seems to be public for everyone
on the site.
Is there any way to have XP Home Edition hide the IP-
address?

If the IP address is not known to the site you are visiting, the
packets would not have any place to be sent. The site can choose
whether to display the information for others to view. Do you see
the IP addresses of other visitors who are there when you are? When
you send email, the IP address from which you connected to the email
server is present in the email headers. When you post to a
newsgroup, your IP address is shown if you use a local newsreader
client. If you post using the Microsoft web interface, your IP
address is not shown in the headers.

The website you visit operates independently of the operating system
you run on your computer. There is nothing you can do about what a
website operator put on his web pages. You can filter out what
shows on your computer by using various software and hardware tools
but this does not change what is on the web page itself. Your
screen will show a place holder where the missing information would
be. You can filter out ads, scripts. popups or popunders and
content. If you use filter for content, the web page usually cannot
be displayed at all on your computer with that browser. You finally
can choose not to visit site to which you object. It is like a
television program. You can choose not to watch a particular
program but you should not impose your choices on the rest of
society.
