All software loaded should be a leagl registered copy.
Having that said, it depends on the software and/or
operating system. Some versions of the Windows Operating
system, even if they are leagal and unregistered can be
updated with Service Packs and Security updates. Some can
even be done on line others you would have to download
the Service Pack and/or security updates and load them
while the system is not on the internet. Windows XP can
not. The security coding in the Service Packs and updates
checks the registration information of the operating
system and if it does not see a certain codes it will
inform you you might have an illeagal copy of software
and to contact Microsoft.
