$mft

I have a number of XP professional machines on my network.
I am having a number of them that are located in the WAN
that receive the message $mft is corrupt. At this point
the machine must be rebuilt. I was told that is a problem
with office xp and needed to put down service pack 2 for
office xp. That didn't buy anything. Does any one have any
ideas?
