View Full Version : Permissions on folders

I have a local network set up and it works. I have some
folders on an XP pro machine that can be read from a 98
machine happily. I tried to give the 98 machine access
to a CD writer on the XP machine and it does not work.
The CD writer can be seen in both machine in network
places but both machines produce a permissions error when
the cd writer is double clicked. The CD writer does work
when accessed directly on the XP machine. The exact
message is :\\machine\drive is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this networkresource. Contact
the administrator of this server to find out if you have
permissions. Not enough server storage is available to
process this command".
I am using the admin account on the xp machine, it won't
access the CR writer in network places but will access
other folders.
Any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like the issue here is that you need to provide access to the network
share that you are using to access the CDR on the XP machine.
If I am understanding this right, you have two choices.
1. You can give EVERYONE access to your CDR folder (not usually recommended
if you are on a lan with other people.
2. You can explicitly authenticate from the Win98 machine to the XP machine.
When you connect, you need to give the user name password of the CDR share.
For example from the CMD prompt you can say: "Net use *
\\machinename\sharename /user:<USERNAME> <PASSWORD> " and you will be
connected.
Hope this helps.

to Mike Nash,
Thank you for your reply I went carefully thru your notes
and the link provide and followed all the instructions.
It made no difference I am still suffering from the same
error message and everything I see says the permissions
are for everyone. My network is confined to my home so
security is not a big issue.
