On my XP machine, a second user account recently
appeared, called "ASP.NET Machine A..." (apparently a
part of the .Net Framework v1.1 installation). I'm the
only user of this machine, but now during start-up I'm
taken to the screen to select a user account. I used to
be able to skip this screen, since it's always the same
account being used. Does anyone know if my account can
be set as the default, or is there some reason I might
ever have to sign in as ASP.NET? Thanks for any help you
can offer!

You can use TweakUI from the PowerToys to make=20
the account no longer visible on the Welcome screen.

I noticed the same thing on my computer. Can you shed
more light on what this ASP account is for, how it works,
and whether or not it is safe to delete it rather than
hide it with TweakUI? Thank you!

ASP account is a limited account used for the .NET framwork. If a routine
calls for the .NET framework, it logs in under the ASP account for access to
it. This is for security issues, since some routines may require access to
certain software, but not total access to the machine, this account was
created so that it will still function properly with out causeing total
system vulnerabilities.
